Grain Dryers: Users Should Make Rational Purchases

Release date:

2024-06-18

In recent years, with the deepening implementation of national land policies and the growing emphasis on food security, coupled with the introduction of agricultural machinery subsidy programs by governments at all levels, grain dryer products have begun to usher in new opportunities for comprehensive development. Currently, the primary users of grain dryers are mostly grain storage and procurement units, large-scale grain-processing enterprises, as well as emerging large-scale farmers and agricultural cooperatives—rural economic cooperative organizations that have emerged in recent years. However, due to the lack of effective oversight from both government and industry authorities, China’s grain dryer market today can be described as a mixed bag, rife with chaos and irregularities.

In recent years, with the deepening implementation of national land policies and the growing emphasis on food security, coupled with the introduction of agricultural machinery subsidy programs at all levels of government, grain dryer products have begun to usher in new opportunities for comprehensive development.

Currently, the users of grain dryers mainly include grain storage and procurement units, large-scale grain-processing enterprises, as well as rural economic cooperatives—such as large-scale farmers and agricultural cooperatives—that have emerged in recent years. However, due to the lack of effective oversight by government and industry authorities, China's grain dryer market today is a mixed bag, rife with chaos and irregularities. With the exception of a very few well-known industry leaders—such as TaitianGong (Shandong) Agricultural and Animal Husbandry Machinery Co., Ltd.—that continue to adhere to a high-end, high-quality product philosophy and thus enjoy rapid and stable growth, most of the brands that have entered the market more recently have opted for a low-end, low-price strategy to quickly grab market share, making competition in the dryer market suddenly intense and highly complex. In particular, certain speculative manufacturers have adopted deceptive practices—such as deliberately creating confusion through obscure jargon and hyping up concepts—to mislead consumers and engage in false advertising, leaving the majority of users thoroughly confused and casting a shadow over China's grain dryer market, which was just beginning to flourish.

A short drying time doesn't necessarily mean high efficiency.

The drying process of grain crops such as rice and corn is a highly complex quantitative transformation process, a phenomenon determined by the inherent physicochemical properties of the grains themselves. Simply put, when the moisture content of the grain itself is as high as 20% to 30%, the moisture can typically decrease by 1 to 2 percentage points—or even more—per hour. However, once the grain’s moisture content drops to between 15% and 20%, the average hourly moisture reduction may fall within the range of 0.3% to 1%. And when the grain’s moisture content falls below 15%, the hourly rate of moisture evaporation may become even lower. To ensure the quality of the grain after drying, reputable dryer manufacturers employ electronic control technology to simulate the natural moisture-decay curve, thereby precisely regulating the heat input and drying duration. As a result, mechanically dried grain can achieve quality that is indistinguishable from, or even superior to, grain dried through traditional sun-drying methods. If users, misled and tempted by unscrupulous manufacturers, insist solely on shortening the drying time, the resulting grain quality will inevitably suffer significantly. Such grain will not only exhibit higher rates of broken kernels and cracked grains but will also have a dull color and compromised appearance and nutritional value.

The grain dryer—a guardian safeguarding the quality of food grains.

The primary function of a grain dryer is to utilize its internal hot-air circulation system to evaporate and remove moisture from the grain. During this process, the machine effectively preserves the grain’s quality—such as its color, flavor, and nutritional value—ensuring its long-term storage and usability. Moreover, using a grain dryer can significantly enhance the efficiency of grain processing, saving substantial labor and time costs.

Grain dryer fault inspection and troubleshooting

If the moisture content of the dried material exceeds the specified value, the solution is to control the drying machine’s production capacity by increasing or decreasing the heat supply. The swinging motion of the roller ring during the cylinder’s rotation is caused by insufficient clamping on the concave joint side of the roller ring. To eliminate this issue, use shims to ensure that the roller ring and the concave joint are evenly aligned and properly clamped, avoiding excessive tightness that could easily lead to accidents.

How to operate and maintain a grain dryer

The drying efficiency of a dryer largely depends on the quality of its combustion chamber. Therefore, during dryer operation, special attention must be paid to the combustion chamber, the blower, and the dust collection and extraction equipment. One hour before starting the dryer, light the furnace and thoroughly inspect all auxiliary equipment—including all transmission components and support structures of the dryer—to ensure that they are securely fastened, functioning properly, smoothly operating, and reliable before commencing operation.

The grain dryer features a simple structure, compact size, and convenient operation. It requires no auxiliary equipment, making it easy to transport and move. The grain dryer uses hot air as the drying medium and employs a recirculating drying process, ensuring even and thorough heating and moisture removal, resulting in high-quality dried grains. This grain dryer uses coal, rice husks, or straw as fuel; after combustion and heat exchange, it produces clean, hot air that does not contaminate the grains being dried.

The hot-air drying oven features a spiral heating system that generates a large volume of hot air in a short time. Through high-temperature treatment, it effectively kills insect eggs and completely eliminates discoloration that may occur during the drying process. The oven’s inner chamber is equipped with metal aluminum wall panels, insulated with silicone rubber cotton, and finished with corrugated color-coated steel sheets or aluminum alloy outer panels. Inside the oven, digital control and monitoring systems ensure precise management of air circulation, humidification, and temperature adjustment.

The “heart” of a grain dryer and its common failure phenomena

The “heart” of a grain dryer and its common failure phenomena

A grain dryer consists of four main components: a heat source, a fan, a control system, and the drying tower body. The fan is the heart of the grain dryer—it primarily delivers heat into the drying layer, enabling convective heat transfer between the hot air and the grain, thereby causing moisture to vaporize and separate from the grain. Consequently, the fan’s performance parameters determine the dryer’s drying efficiency, energy consumption, and the quality of the dried grain. The fan significantly influences the overall energy consumption for conveying and distributing within the drying system, making it a critically important component of the grain dryer.
